I had always wanted to retire to Florida but not to one of those retirement communities on the mainland. I grew up reading Hemingway and love old movies like “Key Largo”;so, my working life daydream was to, one day, retire to the “Keys”. The fact that the climate down there is warm – just as I like it – would be a bonus. I used some of my vacation times researching property down there and decided that I rather liked the “feel” of some of the older properties which I felt represented better value than any of the “new builds” within my budget. Also, the fact that they were still standing made me believe that they had to be acceptably hurricane resistant. Actually, I fell in love with the first one that I viewed; did the deal and set out for Florida the morning after my retirement party.
When Reality Clashes With Your Dreams
For the first few days I was in a state of euphoria; but, it did not take long for the rose-colored spectacles to come off! I am a fair cook but the kitchen facilities made me want to eat out – even for breakfast! The aircon was a cranky antique that got me hot under the collar. The rooms were not laid out right for my style of living – I do not spend all my time, every day, out of doors and I must have a den for my indoor activities. Worst of all, it is not a beach front property (which did not worry me at first – it does have sea views); but, it doesn’t have a pool!
I was having regrets big time. Then, good news, I came into some unexpected money and my bank balance, which had suffered from the house purchase, was suddenly very solvent indeed. I could keep my dream external appearance and location but give the place a total makeover.
