Nevada is known as the gambling capital of the world, well, Las Vegas is, but Nevada, by default, gets the prize because the whole State allows gambling. Hence, by further default, Reno-Vegas’s little brother-is the second biggest gambling capital in the State. Reno is also the most populous city lying outside of the main metropolitan area of Las Vegas.
Reno is more famous for the massive array of casinos that are second only to Las Vegas within the State of Nevada. Prior to modern times Reno was settled by pioneers in the 1850’s around the fertile Truckee River area. The Central Pacific Railroad started expanding into the area in 1863, connecting the CPRR with the UPR-Union Pacific Railroad-in Utah. In 1871 Reno was part of the recently expanded Washoe County and was granted as the County Seat. The mining boom had kicked off with the discovery of both gold and silver in the area between 1850 and 1860. It had impacted the Reno area to the point where the town had grown beyond its expectations. The mining boom only lasted early into the 1900’s by then the communities that had sprung up around the Reno area and it had to survive without the mining.
Today and the Future
Today, Reno is marketed as the ‘Biggest Little City in the World’ and Nevada still produces around seven percent of the world’s gold supply. It was in 1931 that the State of Nevada decided to vote on the legalization of gambling. When it passed unchallenged, cities such as Reno and Las Vegas basically had the right to write blank checks and expand at a vast rate. Hotels and resorts began opening, casinos were on every corner and since then, Reno has simply grown beyond measure. At one point, during the 1940’s Nevada was the only state that allowed ‘quickie’ divorces, but as the rest of the States began catching up, that idea did out.
Nowadays, the casino rule the cities, enticing people to gamble their lives away in such a fun environment that they have no idea what they are doing. The casinos spend a fortune attracting customers, even down to the small details. Companies that provide carpeting in Reno NV are often asked to install carpeting in casinos because they wear out so fast with all the foot traffic.
