Many windows are sold “pre-hung,” which means that they’ve been assembled with frames. Because it is the entire unit that is being installed, installing pre-hung windows is less complicated than building the frame and then installing the window inside it. Having said that, the task of installing a “pre-hung” window still requires a few materials as well as reasonable skills at carpentry. If the task is too complex to perform, visit Arrowroofingandsiding.com for more clarification or call in a skilled carpenter who specializes in Window Installation in Dublin Ohio.

Outlined below are general instructions on how to perform an installation of a pre-hung window. Since directions may slightly vary from product to product, it’s best to go through the manual provided by the manufacturer.

Windows should always be installed from the outside. Place the window into its frame until the flashing in the window properly aligns with the framing that is around the opening. Once the window has been properly placed, have someone else check from the inside of the house to confirm that it is level and plumb.

Now install the flashing band around the window’s opening on the outside. It should be fastened into place with nails. Then apply shims along the sides of the window near the bottom, midpoint and top. Carefully adjust them until the window is level and upright. The shims may be tacked into place using a trim nail or glued into place. Ensure that the window is fully operational, then secure it to the opening by nailing it to the casing or the brick mold.

When the window has been shimmed, and it is plumb and level, it can then be nailed into place from the outside. Using a flush-cut saw, trim the excess wood left on the shims. Pack insulation into any gaps between the frame and the window. The best insulation to use for windows is fiberglass insulation since it functions more efficiently by preventing air from escaping. Molding can be applied inside to complete the installation.
