Winter driving can be torturous even for the best drivers. When roads are slippery with snow and ice, accidents can happen any time any place. This is the time you need your car to be in top-notch shape. Your safety and the safety of other passengers in your car depend on the condition of the wheels and tires of your car.

Before planning a trip or going out of state, it’s a good idea to get your car checked and make sure your wheels and tires are in good condition. Snow and ice can make driving conditions turn dangerous without warning. Driving on mountainous roads and steep inclines requires expertise and the right power and tire traction.

When you are travelling to a snow bound location, the choice of vehicle has to be just right. A four wheel drive is always a better bet. When four wheel drives are not available, two wheel drives with limited slip differential or traction control can be an option to prevent your vehicle getting stuck in the snow.

You would think an SUV or off-roader might be a good choice but in reality a smaller car with good ground clearance is a preferred vehicle. A 4×4 lightweight car can negotiate mountain roads better. The narrower wheels of the small car perform better on snow bound roads than wider tires. Heavier SUVs can slip on inclines and are more difficult to salvage if they get stuck. Front wheel drive is recommended over rear wheel drives. So taking your sub-compact with traction control on your trip is recommended over a mid-size sedan, SUV or luxury vehicle like a BMW or Mercedes (with rear wheel drive).

Black ice formation is a dangerous situation on roadways, bridges and overpasses. This thin layer of ice is barely visible to the motorist as the road appears black and not iced over. Snow, slush and frost is visible to the driver, who can take adequate measures to prevent a mishap. But black ice is deceptive and causes a number of accidents and fatalities every year. Every winter when temperatures plummet, pile ups, spinouts and collisions occur from black ice formation.

When you drive on the Interstate or other highways, be sure to drive slow and with caution when there are warnings for black ice. Keep within speed limits at all times and exercise caution when going down a steep incline. Checking the condition of your car prior to departure can keep you safe; make sure to check the conditions of your tires and wheels. Minneapolis residents can get their tires replaced at local auto service centers at affordable prices.
