While all Craftsman doors, either old or new, have a unique style that defines the door type, there are variations that are well worth considering. With just slight variations in the design elements of the door, it is possible to have a more modern look or a more classic style, while still retaining all the element of the Craftsman design period.
The defining features of Craftsman doors, regardless of the slight twist on the design, is the elegant and solid look of the door with narrow, vertical panels through the bottom two-thirds of the door. Typically, there is also a window or lites in the top third of the door. Also, both the solid bottom and the window are traditionally divided by the dentil shelf.
Traditional and Simple
This traditional style of Craftsman doors can be very simple and elegant with a single door in a frame. To enhance the design, consider choosing an art glass, which is a glass with iron caming and decorative glass.
For a more rustic style of Craftsman doors, add clear glass. And, perhaps, instead of three small vertical windows or a larger mullioned style of window, try a single large window.
Traditional and Ornate
To dress up the traditional style on a larger entrance or for a slightly more elegant look, add a transom and sidelites to the door. These can also feature the clean lines of the style. Plus, the narrow, vertical and horizontal lines of the sidelites and transoms really do add to the style.
Depending on the design of the sidelights, you may also want to consider extending the dentil shelf to the sidelight, which makes for a very interesting look. A larger clear sidelight is another option to bring in light and enhance the design.
Unique Double Craftsman Doors
While not traditionally seen as a double door, this is a great style for a larger entrance. The wood of the door is on display, so choosing a top quality of wood combined with a stain that brings out the natural grain only adds to the beauty of these doors.
Some double Craftsman doors available deviate from the traditional design, providing lites down the door that accentuate the horizontal lines through the door. This is a terrific option for a more modern home, bringing the best of the Craftsman style while also being a complement to the more modern architectural theme.
