rapid prototyping printers

Rapid prototyping printers are 3d printers that construct a 3d creation from nothing by applying material to craft the shape.  Older forms of rapid prototyping were accomplished mostly by removing layers of material from an object. Rapid prototyping printers instead print from the ground up. However, what rapid prototyping printers do is that they remove an artificial cap on the field of people who can produce actual models and prototypes for proposals and projects. By requiring that people be able to do such things by hand it limits the field by adding a requirement to be good with your hands, or that you need to hire people good with their hands building delicate models etc.

Computer technology isn’t always intuitive and does require preparation and training, however there are less innate skills necessary. Working the program and the technology for rapid prototyping printers will require some practice and training; however it’s not as dependent on innate physical skills. No amount of practice is going to make some people good enough at the delicate construction work necessary to make early prototypes by hand.  It also takes a lot more time and energy to get good at those skills.

The upshot of it is that people who are good at design can do business by being good at design and not necessarily at construction or production. Engineering of any sort is a developed fine skill that requires time, energy and practice to get good and having to develop a secondary skill, or pay for someone to perform that task, limits the amount of people with good ideas who are contributing. It could even potentially remove from the market true geniuses at the science, and math of engineering simply because they have shaky hands. In effect having still, skilled hands with good fine motor skills are talents, practice is required to be excellent, and sufficient practice cam take someone with no manual skills and turn them into someone with acceptable manual skills, but that can require a lot of work and time.

Any type of technology like rapid prototyping printers that removes artificial barriers to entry into a field is a good thing. The more we can see the benefits of people who are good at the core skill involved and not dependent on secondary skills and talents the better. The world will benefit from having more designers, architects and engineers who are able to present their ideas in a meaningful way because the ideas are more likely to be taken seriously and potentially become the next great thing. Rapid prototyping printers in this way can help bring the next great design, idea, or invention into the public use.
