Everyone knows what mirrors are but there are, some very weird and interesting facts about them, from their earliest days right up to brand-new mirrors that can be purchased at Palmdale Glass and Mirror Company. Here are just a few of them.
History
• The first mirrors date back to ancient times and actually were not even made from glass. They were simply water pools set in darkened glass. The reflection of the water acted as a mirror to the person gazing into it.
• The first mirrors that were not made from the water came into existence right around 6000 B.C. People back then learned to polish volcanic rock and use them as people today use mirrors.
• Mesopotamia went a step further and developed polished copper, which they began using for mirrors.
Superstition
• Some people believe breaking a mirror can lead to bad luck. This belief comes from ancient Roman times when they believed breaking a mirror led to the breaking of the soul. It later grew into seven years of bad luck. Don’t worry, as breaking a mirror from Palmdale Glass and Mirror Company will not lead to any bad luck, just a new mirror.
• Those of Jewish faith cover mirrors after the death of a loved one. This is done for several days to allow the soul of the person to enter heaven. They believe there is a risk of the soul of the person being trapped in the uncovered mirror and becoming unable to move on after death.
• Children have long loved to tell spooky stories about mirrors. Probably the most famous is the tale of Bloody Mary. In the tale, if Bloody Mary’s name is repeated ten times while staring into a mirror, her spirit will come back from the dead and appear in the mirror behind the person.
