Truck driving school is fast-paced and exciting but it’s not for everyone.  There is a lot of information, including rules, regulations and basic driving knowledge that needs to be acquired before you can even sit behind the wheel of a truck and trailer.  But with the right training and guidance, your studies (in the classroom and in the field) will teach you to drive a very large vehicle under many conditions and following all safety and road rules.

The first week of your training you will be preparing for the written exam by studying the commercial driver’s manual.  It is a 13-section manual that can be collected at any Motor Vehicle office, free of charge.  Your truck driving school can also provide you with the manual. After your written exam and CDL Learner’s permit is acquired, you will learn how to practice safe driving followed by a few weeks of learning advanced driving techniques.  At this time, you will start to prepare for your driving exam, so stay focused and pay attention while you are provided with exceptional training from a professional.  You can expect to receive about 40 hours a week of training and instruction over a 3 to 6 week period.  Truck driver training can be intense with a lot to learn over a short period, but with proper instruction you will be on your way to an exciting career.

About CDL Exams
Written exams are required to obtain a CDL Learners Permit before beginning any truck driver training.  Pennsylvania written exams may vary from other states but all exams follows the Commercial driver’s license manual guidelines.

There are three exams in total before you are fully licensed as a commercial truck driver.  With the proper education and training you will be 100% prepared for working in the industry.

Road Test
You will be required to provide your own vehicle for road testing and you will have a qualified evaluator accompany you as you follow a pre-determined route and perform various driving tasks.  These tasks will be rated and scored towards your passing grade to obtain your CDL license.  You will be using all of the skills and knowledge from truck driver training.  All the maneuvers you perform while doing your road test will be basic maneuvers you will perform everyday on the road.  The testing is to ensure that you are capable and competent to operate the vehicle.
