Prior to 1942, what is now the unincorporated community and census designated place called Fleming Island in the Clay County part of Florida, was a swampy area surrounded by creeks and wetlands with some dry ground. 1942 was when the US Navy put in some runways to form an auxiliary base for their Naval Air Station in nearby Jacksonville (the 4 asphalt runways were known as Naval Outlying Field {NOLF} Fleming Island. Owing to the short length of its runways, NOLF Fleming Island was closed down in the sixties.
The Birth Of Fleming Island
The area lay abandoned until the late 90’s when residential development started. This was largely upscale and aimed at wealthier people who worked in Jacksonville but wanted to live in the outlying countryside and the resulting township is basically a bedroom community for Jacksonville. Fleming Island was given its own ZIP Code in 2004 and, by 2010 its population was officially recorded at 27,126.
Did The Developers Put Sub-Standard Roofs On The Houses?
With most of the houses built in the current millennium, it might seem strange for there to be any need for re-roofing in Fleming Island, FL. Maybe there were a few cases of poor initial construction but surely not very many?
What is more likely is that human whims, little or no preventative maintenance and/or acts of nature lie behind any need for re-roofing. We all appreciate that the roof above our heads is an essential part of any building but we do have a tendency to take it for granted.
Remember that old song about “This Ole House” that went something like “ain’t going to need this house no longer – ain’t got time to fix the shingles” and went on to say that the house was afraid of storms and thunder (it was written back in the fifties by Stuart Hamblen after he had been out hunting with John Wayne). Part of its message is clear – if you do not take care of your roofing shingles you may start to lose them in the next thunderstorm. If you act quickly, a simple replacement or re-fixing might save the day. But, leave it too long and you may find you need to replace the whole roof (or a major portion of it).
In other words, even a house that is only 10 years young might require re-roofing if roof maintenance has been neglected. This can happen under quite normal circumstances; it does not always need a hurricane or falling tree to cost you your roof.
